Duane Denison is an American musician best known as the guitarist for the punk/noise band The Jesus Lizard as well as his more recent ventures in Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers and Tomahawk. Denison was first introduced into the world of music in school while studying classic guitar and furthered his studies into college. Among his many groups, he has won the most praise for his work in the Austin, Texas based band, The Jesus Lizard, which garnered two spots on Rolling Stone magazine’s “Top 100 Albums of the ‘90s.” He left the group in 2000 until their reunion nine years later and is currently still a member.

Denison’s unorthodox style can be attributed to both his formal music training as well as his roots in the punk/noise rock scene. Unlike several of his noise band contemporaries, The Jesus Lizard did not use heavy distortion. Denison explained that his use of arpeggios and complex notations made it necessary to go light on the distortion so the crowd would be able to decipher every individual note. His guitar technique is often regarded as melodic, serving the purpose of adding texture and coloring to the band’s sound.
