Beginner bassists often make some common errors which can prove to be disastrous in the long run. One needs to be careful not to make these blunders which can ruin their efforts that they have made for so many years. In the subsequent paragraphs, we are going to mention some of these errors which a newbie bassist ought to avoid at any cost.

1. Not Reading Music Properly

It is hard to deny the fact that there are some genuinely gifted bassists who never tried to read music; but, they are only a few. It is imperative for any bassist to be able to read music given that they are going to play notes for at least 90% of their time. Although it is entirely up to you, it is advisable to learn how to read notes or music. This will surely help anyone to make great inroads in his or her bass playing career. Apart from learning how to read notes, they will be able to master rhythms, timing, beats, and scales as well.

2. Playing Too Fast

The majority of the bass players focus on speed from the very beginning. It is definitely possible for you to get faster but without sufficient hard work and perseverance, you will tend to become a lot sloppier as well. You must be aware of your capabilities; you will achieve speed gradually and with more practice. One more problem faced by the bass players is that they hardly have any knowledge regarding the timing. The bass and drums form the backbone of every song and every single bass player must comprehend the fact that it is vital to play the right notes at the right time. Consequently, it is more important to maintain one’s timing rather than playing at a fast pace.

3. Not Taking The Help Of A Competent Teacher

It is the general propensity of the bassists to figure out everything on their own. However, taking the help of a tutor for understanding the lessons is of prime importance. Prior to appointing your teacher, ensure that he or she is experienced enough to provide you with the proper training. Moreover, he must be a bass guitar tutor. In fact, you can easily become an expert bass player provided you receive the best guidance instead of trying to learn everything on your own.

4. Not Trying To Comprehend The Basics

In most cases, a bassist suffers from overconfidence and thinks that he is one of the best bass players in town. You might succeed in appearing great in front of your buddies or relatives, but it takes lots of dedication and commitment to become a really good bassist. It will be a folly on your part to invest the initial stages of your training in learning only parts of the songs since it is not going to help you eventually. You will end up being the one who does have too many skills of playing the bass.

5. Not Enjoying Playing

In case you “just try” to learn to play the bass, there is a chance for you to become bored. Try to learn something that invokes interest in you or something which you find to be innovative. Having fun while learning the bass will surely bring out the best in you.

Final Thoughts ...

The electric bass is a great instrument but it definitely takes some time before you get the hang of it. As a new player, do yourself a favor and avoid those bad habits listed above. They will only make things harder down the road!
