It's possible to learn to improve your vocal range. Most people believe their voice is just what it is and it cannot change. Just not true. The upper and lower ranges can be pushed gently over time. Vocal exercises can improve range and tone. The voice will need to be exercised just like a muscle. The more used, the stronger it gets.

How To Find Your Natural Vocal Range

To begin your voice must be warmed up. It is Important when trying to reach outside of your comfortable range. Straining the vocal chords can cause damage. Like with physical exercise, you must stretch before working out, or it is possible to pull a muscle. Start in your current range going up and down notes to warm up. The natural range of most people is one to two octaves. An octave is eight notes. Choose an instrument and play one note at a time. Typically a piano is used when singing, or a guitar. To find out what your range is now you may want to use a piano. It will produce clear sounds that you can replicate. You will also know what the actual notes are you are singing. Start at middle C and try to reproduce the sound you hear. If your range is lower just start and the next C lower and move up then down until you are unable to sing the note. Pay attention to where you are most comfortable singing, and this is your range.

Improving Your Vocal Range

To sing properly good posture should always be observed. The head is up and the shoulders back. Relax the shoulders and neck. Feel the body being drawn up and feeling the neck, chest and abdominal area open. These are all the sectors that breath must pass to emit sound. Keep good posture wherever you go, and it will eventually be automatic. Breathing exercises are just as important. Voice control is dependent upon breath control. The diaphragm is positioned just below the ribs. It controls the air that goes to the lungs. Place awareness in this area. First breathe regularly and feel your diaphragm expand and contract. Breathe in gently and slowly feeling diaphragm expand and contract, pull it in slowly and slightly, progress drawing in breath to the of the lungs. Exhale slowly emptying lungs keeping the diaphragm extended. It should decrease naturally after they are empty. Practice this until it occurs naturally when singing. As has been repeated with every exercise and the warm up, you must sing every day. Be gentle with your voice. Warm up in the comfort range and practice singing in the same range. To expand the vocal range, sing the same song a little higher than a little lower. Listen to yourself every day and analyze your voice. With practice and time, you will see improvement.

Final Thoughts ...

Finally, a fantastic natural guide when learning how to improve singing is to discover the natural tone that lies inside you. It is often tough to find, but you'll have to let go of inhibitions to learn it. Many vocalists have quite a lot of potential, but they never break the shackles of shyness, therefore never ascertain their exact tone. Try to fight the nerves and let go; your voice will thank you for it.
