Former Backing Bands That Made It Big

It's tough being a backing band. You work hard to be good enough to rock with a well-known front man but still remain largely unknown. But every once in a while, there comes a backing band (or members of a backing band) that are good enough to be stars in their own right. Below, we take a look a few backing bands that eventually made it big.

1. The E Street Band

The E Street Band are usually seen behind Bruce Springsteen, but they were able to make a place for themselves in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Being among the musical elite, the E Street Band has also played with many other great musical giants such as Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and Neil Young.

2. The M.G.'s

The M.G.'s was among the first backing bands able to reach the Hall of Fame in the Rock and Roll musical genre. You can hear them on many Stax Records recordings backing huge funk and soul artists such as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and many others.

3. The Band

The Hawks band would rename itself The Band after the tour with Bob Dylan. The Band has been formed in the 50s by the members of Ronnie Hawkins' band. They have become eventually the touring band for Levon Helm, Bob Dylan, Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson. Its members were all gifted musicians who created some of the best roots-rock as individuals and as a group. They begin recording classic albums such as Music from Big Pink and The Basement Tapes.

4. The Eagles

The Eagles band has been formed in the year 1971. Before they come to form a band together the four original members played as session musicians around Los Angeles and in their own bands. Then, they were all recruited to perform on the third album of singer Linda Ronstadt and tour with her. Even if all four members played together live with Ronstadt just once, this experience was enough for them to decide that they have their own band. This is the way the Eagles were born.

5. Crazy Horse

When Neil Young recorded one of his rock albums, he recruited the Crazy Horse band to play with him. Crazy Horse is a country-rock band based in Los Angeles. The classic albums recorded together with Neil Young are the most famous of the band. However, Crazy Horse backup band was able to also make it big on its own, recording five albums on its own.

6. Fairport Convention

Fairport Convention is the backing band that contributed to the classic albums of Nick Drake, an English folk artist. The band, however, is also widely considered to be among the most significant bands in English folk rock. The Fairport Convention band has recorded several classic albums on its own.
