Armstrong at the MGM Grand back in 2009*
Things are getting very hectic in the world of the pop punk band Green Day. Set to release the first of a trio of brand new albums along with the onslaught of public promotional appearances, touring and festivals dates, the last thing that band needed was an unhealthy frontman.
According to the bands official site, Green Day singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong has checked himself in to rehab following a tumultuous performance during this weekend’s iHeartRadio Festival at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas where the clearly inebriated frontman ended his short set with an obscenity fueled rant directed at the concert’s promoter, Clear Channel.
And just to add that punk rock cherry on top, Armstrong aggressively smashed his guitar before clearing the stage.
According to the Las Vegas Sun, the band took to the stage about half an hour after their scheduled appearance but that didn’t keep Armstrong from stopping mid-way through “Basket Case” once he noticed the digital ticker (which relayed the band’s allotted time) had come down to the one minute mark. He then used the remaining minute to vent out his frustrations to the crowd.
Unfortunately, there’s a bit too much colorful language to quote verbatim but most of you can probably read between the lines.
"Give me a ... break," Armstrong vented. "One minute left. One minute ... left. You're gonna give me ... one minute? Look at that ... sign right there. One minute. Let me ... tell you something. Let me tell you something. I've been around since ... 1980 ... 8 and you're going to give me one ... minute? You gotta be ... kidding me ... I'm not ... Justin Bieber."
Among Friday night’s headliners were notable pop artists Usher and Rihianna, the former of which happened to be the famous mentor of Beiber. Rihanna on the other hand was set to take the stage after Green Day’s performance to close out the night.
The statement released by Green Day’s people was quick to point out they do not believe that Clear Channel had anything to do with the cutting the set. Also, they have not disclosed the specific reasoning behind Armstrong’s admittance into rehab – although that smashed guitar should suggest that the singer seek a bit of anger management while he’s in there as well.
"Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse," read the statement. "We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas. We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances."
Although the statement didn’t give any specifics on what upcoming “promotional appearances” might be axed, Green Day has already postponed today’s (Monday) live performance for Los Angeles radio station KROQ 106.7. There is still no word on the rest of this week’s scheduled promotions, namely Green Day’s appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."
Kind of makes you rethink what exactly happened earlier this month when Armstrong was rushed to an Italian hospital for an undisclosed “illness” which forced the band to cancel a Barcelona show.
