Nowadays, the flanger effect is one of the most used by many guitarists across the globe. The polarizing effect produced is almost similar to that of a jet plane swirl. However, the flanger effects pedals are underrated while they can perform the same functions as the modulation pedals and also generate a multiplicity of distinctive tunes. The flanger is the most versatile modulator that guitarists need. The flanger pedal has a total of four knobs and three are related to the low-frequency oscillator or LFO namely, width (depth or rate), speed or rate, and manual. The fourth knob that controls the intensity of some sounds that may occur due to the creation of what we call negative delays. The knob feeds this negative delay and enhances the flanging effects by adding some sonic possibilities.   With this in mind, guitarists can formulate some ideas on how to craft flangers to produce these sounds. Below are some of the ways that you can explore the diverse sounds that can be made by flangers. It is important to note at this point that the LFO sweep shapes are either logarithmic or linear of course depending on the flanger itself. However, the same basic principles will apply across all types of flangers.

Flanger Effects Pedal Tips

Chorus: Flangers make incredible chorus sounds that are sometimes mistaken for a chorus. You need to turn the manual knob to the extreme left and set the width at 7-8-o’clock and the speed should be at around 9’o’clock. Remember to keep the regeneration settings at its minimum. If you feel that the sound is too pitchy, try reducing the speed or the width. Resonant Filter: You need to set the LFO width to 'freeze’ or zero. Additionally, increase the regen to a good amount in order to increase the resonance, and then turn the manual knob to the filter frequency level. Classic Flanger Sweeps: Put a moderate rate or speed and set it at the maximum width to allow the delay line sweep from lowest to the highest delay times. This will showcase the flanger’s underlying character. Lastly, add some regen to taste. Jet Flyby: For a jet flyby, you need to set at moderate rate or speed. The manual should be turned halfway and enhance it using the regen. Set the width to your desired sweep range and adjust the manual to the sweep region. Freq Out: All controls should be set to the maximum. When the width is maximum there is no need to position the manual. Auto-wah: The width needs to be low to allow limited delay times and the speed should be fast. Add some regen to intensify filter resonance. Then, use the manual control to tune the auto-wah frequencies.

Final Thoughts ...

In conclusion, with the above tips in mind, you will be able to use your flanger to produce a lot of different sounds. You should do a lot of experimenting in order to adequately maneuver the different tunes and at the same time have fun with your guitar.
