Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath have dropped a monster bombshell today, posting a HUGE hint of a reunion announcement coming on 11th November 2011.

Today Black Sabbath's official website, www.blacksabbath.com, unveiled a huge splash page displaying the dates “11.11.11”. Could this signal THAT announcement Heavy Metal fans have been waiting oh so long for...the reunion of Black Sabbath's original line-up.

Speculation that the original Black Sabbath line-up is to reform has circulated for years, however, after Tony Iommi recently broke the news that the band have already had a rehearsal session together, we all started to wonder if the Black Sabbath reunion was actually going to happen!

Black Sabbath

Earlier this week Stereoboard reported that guitar legend Tony Iommi has a load of material ready and waiting for a new album. Further fuelling the rumors that a Black Sabbath reunion is imminent, Iommi told VH1 Radio Network he has “a lot of stuff” and “plenty of ideas”.

“I’m writing all the time. I’ve got a lot of stuff. I’ve got a studio at home. I just go in and play for a bit, put something down. My engineer is good; he’ll program up drums and whatever else. So I’ve got plenty of ideas for whatever thing I want to use them as.”

The possible comeback would involve the four original members of Sabbath, Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, playing together once again.

What’s more for Sabbath fans is that the reunion is shaping up so that if it happens, it could very well result in a headline slot at the prestigious Sonisphere or Download festivals in 2012 – but we’ll have to wait and see on that one too.

Even though alternative rock legends R.E.M. called it quits last month after 31 years together, the band has released two different music videos for a new single – perhaps their last!

The first video for We All Go Back Where We Belong – shot in black and white - stars Kirsten Dunst and is similar to Andy Warhol's screen tests, where the video serves as a moving photograph. In the video, Dunst smiles, laughs, looks embarrassed and experiences a variety of other emotions through the video.

The second video stars artist/poet/activist John Giorno.

Speaking on the video project lead singer Michael Stipe said, "To be able to work with John and Kirsten was a dream I carried since we recorded the song, and their participation completes the song for me."

We All Go Back To Where We Belong is one of three new tracks that will be included in R.E.M.'s upcoming final album, R.E.M., Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, 1982-2011. The album will be a 40 song retrospective from their career.

On December 6, the Black Keys will release El Camino, their Danger Mouse-produced follow-up to last year's breakthrough Brothers. (Remember, it was literally deemed a Breakthrough by MTV, who mistook the band for the Black Eyed Peas due to a hilarious "clerical error.") Right now, you can hear first single "Lonely Boy," which was released digitally today and is set to drop as the A-side on a limited edition 12" with fellow El Camino cut "Run Right Back" on November 25 as part of Record Store Day's Black Friday series.

It's streaming via a YouTube video the Ohio blues-rock duo shared early this morning that's accompanied by footage of a man dancing at what appears to be a motel. Fit with vine-swinging, '60s surf leads and a mammoth chorus, this is the sound of the Black Keys really going for it. You will be prompted to wiggle as well.

Jack White's Bluesy U2 Cover

10/19/11 10:12 AM

Jack White knew what he was doing when he took on "Love Is Blindness" as part of Q Magazine's 20th-anniversary tribute to U2's soon-to-be-reissued Achtung Baby. While the Irish arena rockers are probably best known for their windswept anthems, the Achtung Baby finale isn't too far from White's tastes in its original version: There's a "The House of the Rising Sun"-like chord progression, peals of organ, streaks of guitar fuzz, and a particularly emotion-wracked Bono vocal.

For this cover, the White Stripes frontman goes back to the song's down-and-dirty blues-rock heritage, howling the pained lyrics as if he were on a lost Nuggets cut. Even better than the real thing? Have a listen to the BBC Radio 2-premiered track below — and forever banish that OMG-WTF Insane Clown Posse collabo from your brain cells (via Interference as first pointed out by Consequence of Sound).

Jack White, "Love Is Blindness" (U2 Cover)

The cover appears on Q's AHK-toong BAY-bi Covered tribute album, which also features Nine Inch Nails, Garbage, Depeche Mode, the Killers, Snow Patrol, and more. The tribute is available with copies of the magazine's next issue, hitting shelves on October 25th. Check out the track list below. In related news, U2's massive Achtung Baby reissue arrives on October 31st.

AHK-toong BAY-bi Covered tracklist:

1. Nine Inch Nails, "Zoo Station"
2. U2, "Even Better Than The Real Thing (Jacques Lu Cont Mix)"
3. Damien Rice, "One"
4. Patti Smith, "Until The End Of The World"
5. Garbage, "Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses"
6. Depeche Mode, "So Cruel"
7. Snow Patrol, "Mysterious Ways"
8. The Fray, "Trying To Throw Your Arms Around The World"
9. Gavin Friday, "The Fly"
10. The Killers, "Ultraviolet (Light My Way)"
11. Glasvegas, "Acrobat"
12. Jack White, "Love Is Blindness"

William Shatner is Iron Man

10/17/11 9:40 AM

Working with Zakk Wylde on new album blew his mind.

The former Star Trek star is revisting space with a new concept album entitled 'Seeking Major Tom'.

Shatner recently sat down with Spinner to discuss making the album, as well as his lack of knowledge on Freddie Mercury and Queen, his honary Headbanger Award from the Revolver Golden Gods Award show earlier this year, and working with many notable guitarists such as Steve Miller, Peter Frampton, Brad Paisley, Steve Howe, and Zakk Wylde.

When asked about Zakk Wylde's contributions to a cover of the Black Sabbath classic 'Iron Man', Shatner said,

"I've never seen fingers fly on a fretboard so quickly. He spent the whole day laying out his track and laying down another track on top of that. He was intricately working that song like an actor would do with a Shakespeare soliloquy, where every word has a meaning and you try and get the rhythm and the meaning and the sense, and yet throw it away so it doesn't seem obvious that you're working it. This guy blew my mind."

While the Foo Fighters made a fake gay porno, the Black Keys decided to keep it a little less racy yesterday with a fake car commercial (starring Bob Odenkirk!) announcing details for their forthcoming El Camino LP. Here’s the tracklist:

02 “Dead and Gone”
03 “Gold on the Ceiling”
04 “Little Black Submarines”

06 “Run Right Back”
07 “Sister”
08 “Hell of a Season”
09 “Stop Stop”
10 “Nova Baby”
11 “Mind Eraser”

El Camino is out 12/6 on Nonesuch. The first single, “Lonely Boy,” drops 10/26.

Seven songs from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 10th album, "I'm With You," made it into the punk-funk icons' 90-minute set Monday night at a private show at The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood. "I'm With You" will be released Aug. 30, and the same day the Fuse TV network will air the Roxy concert.

The Peppers went back and forth between new tracks and vintage cuts, opening with "Monarchy of Roses" and, besides their smash hits, rarely reaching back into the 20th century for material. Like many bands that soften their rougher edges during the second decade of their existence, the Peppers found album tracks such as "Charlie" to create a smooth segue from one new songs to the next and a hard funk track such as "I Like Dirt" to provide a contrast.

The shirtless leaders Anthony Kiedis -- who did start the night in black tails -- and bassist Flea, in matching red pants and Pumas, were their usual frenetic selves, flinging their bodies around the stage, hopping in place and rolling through mosh pit-inspired moves. New guitarist Josh Klinghoffer is still finding his place onstage, striking punk poses and butting up against Kiedis and Flea, but never with the flair for the frantic the band's leaders posses.

Flea reminisced about seeing Big Audio Dynamite recently at the Roxy Theatre, and also detailed the way he and Kiedis would sneak into the venue by climbing up to the second story and crawling through a window into a dressing room. "You hung out with the band, drank their beer and a saw a show for free," he said. Bars have since been installed on the windows.

The Peppers were assisted by Mauro Refosco on congas, a keyboardist and, for "Did I Let You Know," Mike Bulger on trumpet.

The show, presented by Coca-Cola Zero, will be broadcast on Fuse TV on Aug. 30 at 9PM/8PM ET/CT.

Set List:
"Monarchy of Roses"
"Can't Stop"
"Ethiopia"
"Charlie"
"Meet Me at the Corner"
"I Like Dirt"
"The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie"
"Throw Away Your Television"
"Factory of Faith"
"Me and My Friends"
"Did I Let You Know"
"Californication"
"Look Around"
"Soul to Squeeze"
"By the Way"
Encore:
Instrumental
"Give It Away"

Black Sabbath

After years of rumors, Tony Iommi has announced that the original lineup of Black Sabbath is going to reunite for a new album and tour. "We’re really looking forward to it and I think the stuff we’ve been writing is really good,’’ the guitarist told the Birmingham Mail. "It’s all been very hush-hush. Ozzy’s been the worst at trying to hold it back. He’s doing a lot of TV and he’s being asked stuff about a reunion and he’s going 'Well, I never say never.'"

Just six months ago, Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler put out a press release saying a reunion would never happen. "I would like to make it clear, because of mounting speculation and rumours, that there will be definitely no reunion of all four original members of Black Sabbath," he wrote. "Whether to record an album or to tour."

Ozzy Osbourne on Black Sabbath Reunion: "I'll Never Say Never"

The Ozzy-led lineup of Sabbath hasn't toured since 2005, and their last album was 1978's Never Say Die. They attempted to cut a new album with Rick Rubin in 2001, but the sessions fell apart and Osbourne turned his attention to his solo career. The Ronnie James Dio lineup reunited under the moniker Heaven & Hell in 2006 but split four years later, after Dio passed away.

Iommi said that keeping the reunion a secret has been challenging. "‘I had umpteen number of people on the phone asking if I fancied getting together with a band, but I couldn’t tell them what I was doing," he said. "I just had to say I was busy.’’ Sabbath drummer Bill Ward didn't participate in the Heaven & Hell project, and Iommi is concerned about his health. "He hasn't been 100 percent," he said. "He had an operation a few months ago, so we'll see how he is."

UPDATE:

In a statement, Iommi says that these quotes are from June and claims that he was merely "speculating" and "shooting the breeze." However, his statement does not actually deny the crux of his statements: that Black Sabbath are reuniting for a new album and planned tour.

Dio

The late Ronnie James Dio was famously the frontman for Rainbow, Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell and, of course, Dio.

But before then he fronted Elf (previously Electric Elves), whose rare 1971 tracks now are being released. Described as the work of a “rock/honky tonk/blues band,” Elf’s forthcoming release, And Before Elf… There Were Elves, shines a light on Dio’s early vocal skills.

Set for an October release via the Niji Entertainment Group, And Before Elf… features 12 previously unreleased tracks from 1971, both in the studio and live. The album will feature a lenticular/3D/hologram cover on which, when you turn it, you will see two alternating images: Ronnie from the first Elf LP as well as a vintage group shot from 1971. Longtime Dio engineer Wyn Davis remastered the original tapes.

Elf made three albums before Dio left in 1975, to co-form Rainbow with Deep Purple’s guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Elf Guitarist David “Rock” Feinstein (Dio’s cousin) would go on to front The Rods.

The tracklisting for And Before Elf… There Were Elves is:

1. “You Shook Me”
2. “Stay with Me”
3. “Four Day Creep”
4. “Buckingham Blues”
5. “Wakeup Sunshine”
6. “Driftin'”
7. “Smile For Me Lady”
8. “You Felt the Same Way”
9. “Simple Man”
10. “Drown Me In the River”
11. “Cold Ramona”
12. “Little Queenie”

RHCP

July can be the hottest month in America, so the Red Hot Chili Peppers thought it best to do a "Rain Dance."

The veteran rock troupe has now confirmed that the track "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" will be the first single from their new album "I'm With You," and that the song is set to arrive on July 18.

"I'm With You," as previously reported, will be out on Aug. 30; the song sits squarely in the middle of the album's tracklist. If you missed it, check out the new album art.

"Rain Dance Maggie" will also be up for sale on July 18. Fans who need a good reminder can sign up for the band's Facebook Event page, and are guaranteed various sorts of tease material until then.

But consider, too -- July 18 is on Monday. And as this industry often works, we wouldn't be surprised if it leaks early.

The single art to "Maggie" features all four members of RHCP, including the frequently shirtless Flea, frontman Anthony Kiedis in his party shirt and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who replaced former guitarist John Frusciante.

As producer Rick Rubin said earlier this month, he credits that personnel change as a source of a new sound for the group.

Here are Red Hot Chili Peppers' 2011 tour dates so far:

08/13 – Osaka, JP @ Summer Sonic
08/14 – Tokyo, JP @ Summer Sonic
09/24 – Rio de Janeiro, BR @ Rock in Rio

Time to get excited -- Radiohead have debuted two brand new songs online. The tracks -- 'The Daily Mail' and 'Staircase' -- were played as a part of producer Nigel Godrich's 'From The Basement' sessions.

The band have been busy of late. Having made their return with new album 'The King of Limbs' earlier this year, the Oxford quintet made a surprise and low-key appearance on the Park Stage at the Glastonbury festival at the end of June.

Of the two new tracks, hardcore fans of the band will already be familiar with 'The Daily Mail.' The song was premiered at a Thom Yorke solo show in Radiohead's hometown of Oxford last year and the addition of the band lends the track an extra dimension of power.

The performance was recorded for broadcast and made its broadcast debut on French channel Canal +. It is understood that the BBC have bought the rights to the studio performance and intend to show it in the near future.

Meanwhile, Radiohead have launched a new 'Weibo' micro-blog in China. A Chinese version of Twitter, it remains to be seen how much Radiohead -- themselves outspoken critics of China's policy towards Tibet -- will be able to post in a country notoriously censorious of internet activity.
