PAL's Top Drummers of Rock

12/7/12 2:49 PM

Although Animal is clearly one of the best - not to
mention wildest - drummers the world has ever seen,
this list is dedicated to humans only. Next time.

How’s it going, music fans? You know, in the world of music, it seems as though guitarists get all of the attention. When we think about the world’s most signature rock stars, we almost always think of the guitarist – especially if they also take the roll as the singing, ax-wielding frontman. You have Clapton, Hendrix, Page, Van Halen and tons more. And it makes sense in a way; there’s just something about an electric guitar that just oozes cool and is the very instrument that got several musicians – including myself – into the huge world of music. I mean, how many of us haven’t cranked out a wicked air guitar solo or two in front of their mirror as a kid. Well, I might be the only one but my point remains the same – guitarists just win in the cool department. But there is a member of the band that is just as important but doesn’t seem...

Portrait by Joseph Karl Stieler, 1820

Imagine being able to be among the first people ever to hear a forgotten piece of music for the first time in years. No, I’m not talking about another lost Jimi Hendrix demo. Think farther back… much farther back. As in centuries.

That’s right, a newly discovered and never before heard composition – at least not by anyone alive – from the one and only Ludwig Von Beethoven has been played for the first time at a British  university on Thursday. Now that’s what you call old school!

According to Reuters, The two-minute long piece – which is an organ harmony to the 1,000-year old Gregorian hymn "Pange Lingua" – was discovered by University of Manchester Professor Barry Cooper while studying a copy of a 192-year-old Beethoven sketchbook.

"Other scholars looked at it without realizing what it was as it looks like a random collection of chords. When I looked at it I saw the series of chords and saw a tune there," Cooper told Reuters. "It's a Gregorian chant ...

Through one of the magazine’s signature online polls, readers have named Metallica’s 1986 album Master of Puppets as the Greatest Heavy Metal Album of All Time, beating out other legendary heavy rockers such Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

As expected, albums from legendary icons of heavy metal pretty much owned the entire list. Even Guns N’ Roses was invited to the party, proving that the definition of heavy metal is indeed an open one.

"Metal fans are a very passionate bunch,” wrote the editors at Rolling Stone. “They're also very opinionated, so when we asked them to vote for their favorite metal albums we expected a huge response. We also expected a big debate about the very definition of 'heavy metal.' So...

Debut Elvis album which inspired London Calling

There’s a lot that goes into making an album. First things first, you have to write the songs, get them polished up, record the tracks, mix and master them… and when all that is done, you’re still not done. You will need a way to get your songs noticed… and what better way to get your memorable songs noticed than with an equally memorable album cover! Although the main part of rock will and forever be about the music, there is no doubt that an iconic album cover can go a long way in making great songs reach the masses, because for better or worse, it’s much easier to simply look at a picture than it is to listen to an entire 45 minute album. Sure, of course that’s not ideal and the songs should speak for themselves, but there are a lot of things that should happen that don’t. All that aside, read on and check out some of the most memorable album covers in the world of rock. These are among my favorites and are not necessarily the best of ...
