A guitar player with a penchant for electronics, B. Andrew Barta didn't start out to become a manufacturer. Rather, he developed the SansAmp, a solid-state device that mimics the sound of various amps, for his own personal use. At the time, he was doing some amp modifications for Foreigner, so he asked guitarist Mick Jones to try out the device. Before he knew it, word got out, and he received request after request from guitarists to build them a similar device. As a result, he formed TECH 21 in 1989 with the idea of selling the technology to some major manufacturers. When they failed to see the device's potential, he set out on his own, and the rest is history.
Thanks to Barta's passion for both guitars and electronic design, TECH 21 has since become a pioneer of the direct recording movement, since the SansAmp allowed musicians to emulate a variety of amplifiers and record directly to a mixing console. This innovative way of signal processing was the first of a solid line of guitar and bass solutions, all of them hand built in the United States.
With sonic tweakers like Matt Bellamy (MUSE), Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Johnny Christ (Avenged Sevenfold) and Trey Gunn of King Crimson using your equipment, it’s hard to dispute that TECH 21 has some of the coolest audio technology out there today.
