Brand Spotlight: Electro-Voice

There's a good reason why Electro-Voice has been a leader in professional audio equipment for over 80 years -- a steadfast dedication to designing the best gear possible. From microphones to digital signal processors, amps, loudspeakers and more, they are responsible for a huge chunk of the gear that drives live music the world over. Below, we take a look at some of our favorite pieces of gear from the esteemed brand.

Electro-Voice EVID Series

Not every environment has the room to fit a pair of full-sized speakers. With that said, EV designed the perfect solution in the form of their EVID series, compact surface-mount speakers designed to deliver full-range sound in a miniature package. These speakers are the perfect solution for environments where space can be an issue, including smaller churches, boardrooms, offices, etc.. And despite their small size, these speakers pack plenty of punch thanks to their titanium diaphragm and dual woofers. More specifically, this series features .75" tweeter / 3" woofers on the 3.2 model, 1" tweeter / 4" woofers on the 4.2 model and 1" tweeter / 6" woofers on the 6.2 model. Other notable features include full bandwidth overload protection for HF and LF, magnetically shielded design for use with video applications, easy installation construction and more. Both models are available in matte black or white.

Electro-Voice ZLX Series

The goal of the ZLX series is simple -- to deliver the great performance at a price that can't be beaten. Beginning with the smaller of the two, the ZLX-12 is a passive loudspeaker equipped with a 12" woofer (designed to create plenty of low-end punch inside a compact enclosure) and a 1.5" high-frequency titanium compression driver, boasting a range of 55 Hz – 20 kHz. The ZLX-15 is similar but ups the woofer size to 15", giving it an expanded low-frequency range for extra punch. Sure, at $300 and $400, you might be thinking that you can't possibly get a good quality loudspeaker at those prices, but believe me when I say that these two loudspeakers get plenty loud and pack enough power to work as your main PA, even without a subwoofer. And best of all, the ZLX series is built with high-quality components and engineered to last years of use. And just in case you're looking for a powered loudspeaker, you can always upgrade to the ZLX-12P or ZLX-15P for just $100 more.

Electro-Voice ELX Series

Not only does the ELX series features loudspeakers at a very affordable price point, but they are also each built with professional sound quality in mind as well. Consisting of the ELX-112, ELX-115, and their powered versions -- the ELX-112P and ELX-115P -- they are made to deliver a clear and powerful sound along with easy to use intuitive controls all wrapped up in a very portable package. And speaking about portability, these loudspeakers are surprisingly light thanks to their internally braced 15-mm plywood enclosures, making transportation and setup as easy as it gets. Other core features of the series include mic and line inputs with combo XLR/1/4” and RCA inputs for versatile mix capabilities, XLR outputs for chaining multiple ELX full-range or subwoofers, selectable 100 Hz high-pass filter for use with an external subwoofer and more. Featuring excellent construction, great frequency range, amazing sound, and a price that makes it highly accessible, the ELX series is easily one of the best values in pro audio.

Electro-Voice R300-HD Wireless Mic System

While Electro-Voice might be better known for their speakers, they also know how to construct a good mic, or in this case, a mic and receiver combo. Featuring the HT-300 handheld transmitter and the PL22 dynamic mic, this system is the perfect easy to use setup for speaking engagements, singing or just general emcee work. The PL22 itself is a highly versatile mic, able to reject unwanted background noise and deliver minimal feedback thanks to its tight cardioid polar pattern. It also delivers up to 14 hours of continuous use on just two AA batteries. And last but definitely not least, the R300-HD is also a breeze to use thanks to features like ClearScan, which automatically finds the clearest channel, and EZsync, a one-step channel setup.  All in all, it will be tough to find a better wireless mic solution at this price point.
