Brand Spotlight: Seymour Duncan Effects Pedals

While Seymour Duncan will always be primarily known for their huge catalog of pickups, they have quietly amassed an impressive lineup of guitar effects pedals in recent years. Duncan's effects display the same sensibility as their pickups -- great quality and construction with a unique twist thrown in from time to time. Today, we're taking a look at a few of our favorite guitar effects pedals from the legendary manufacturer.

Killing Floor High Gain Boost

More than just a simple booster, the Killing Floor is able to deliver high-quality, amp-like overdrive that’s both rich and bluesy, along with an impressive amount of volume boost. We’re talking complex, boutique-style tone shaping capabilities with plenty of versatility that works just as well with both humbuckers and single-coils. What's even more impressive is the amount of range in the gain. Long story short, the Killing Floor is easily able to deliver everything from a subtle boost to a full-on growl with the twist of a knob. So much so in fact that we had to roll off the volume knob just a bit to keep it from getting too wild. Add in the three-voice toggle and you have a recipe for a highly versatile, highly capable booster.

Dirty Deed Distortion

The Dirty Deed distortion was created one thing in mind -- delivering a highly versatile, highly refined distortion that nearly any player can use. Overall, the Dirty Deed's tone can be classified as a transparent and highly organic, working along with your instruments natural sound instead of burying it. It's also a breeze to use, featuring simple yet versatile controls -- most notably the middle treble and bass switches which allows the pedal to deliver everything from a smooth, Tube Screamer-style growl to thick, fat distortion at a moment's notice. And while many modern distortion pedals claim to capture the true sound of an overdriven tube amp, it's a mixed bag with some doing it far better than others. Unsurprisingly, Duncan's distortion pedal is in the latter camp as it is able to deliver a convincingly tube-like overdrive. From classic rock to blues, metal and more, the Dirty Deed is distortion done right!

Pickup Booster

While there are many great effects out there created to shape and color your tone in all sorts of creative ways, sometimes all you really need is a stompbox that can add some strength and fatness to your current pickups while keeping the natural sound of your instrument intact. That's where the Pickup Booster comes in. With its Class A, low-noise circuit design, the Pickup Booster is a truly transparent booster designed to power your pickups' sound while keeping things crystal clear and noise-free. There's even a resonance switch that can make single-coils sound like either old-school or modern humbuckers. From cutting solos to maximum saturation and sustain, the Pickup booster can work wonders on your sound. Leave it to Seymour Duncan to create a pedal that truly makes any set of pickups that much better.

Shape Shifter Tremolo

The Shape Shifter is a stereo tremolo pedal created to give users the classic textures they grew up with along with the more extreme types of sounds tremolos are known for (including helicopter chops, piano stabs, backward swells and more). A common theme among modulation pedals is that many are just not that easy to use. With the Shape Shifter, you can tell that Duncan spent a lot of time figuring out the perfect controls scheme that strikes a great balance between versatility and ease of use. From controlling the phase, the pulses per second, wave shape and a whole lot more, this tremolo pedal gives you complete control. There's even a tap tempo feature that allows you to set the speed with a few hits of the switch. If you're a fan of tremolo or just consider yourself a pretty experimental guitar player, the Duncan Shape Shifter is definitely worth a closer look.
